Online Access Pass for Two - 31 Days of Riesling Masterclasses

Online Access Pass for Two - 31 Days of Riesling Masterclasses

July sees the wine world join together for the annual "31 Days of Riesling" celebrations. And to recognise this, we're joining forces with other members of the Local Wine School to spend two evenings singing the praises of this most distinctive, delicious and aristocratic of grapes. OK, one of the evenings is in August, but don't let that bother you.

It's important first of all to establish one thing. Riesling Is Not In And Of Itself Sweet. Riesling is a grape that can be made into dry, medium and sweet wines (and sparkling), but that's up to the winemakers, and most of them today prefer to turn into dry, rather than sweet versions. Got that? Ok...

Our "31 Days of Riesling" Masterclasses (featuring mostly dry wines) take place over consecutive Saturday evenings and run as follows:-

Session One: On Saturday 25th July, Germany will be taking centre stage. Laura Kent of Yorkshire Wine School will present an overview of the various regions taking in the spectacular scenery, fascinating history, geography, geology and much, much more. We'll taste Rieslings from the Nahe and Rüdesheim in the Rheingau, and also dip over the river Rhine into France to see how Alsace Riesling compares. You'll also receive tasting cards to make notes on, a German winelands map and a guide to German wine styles. Even though the three wines are on the dry rather than sweet side of the see-saw. Just in case the message hadn't got through...

Session Two - Saturday 1st August sees us engaged in the Great Riesling Grape Debate, with three Wine School owners going head-to-head to convince you of the merits of Rieslings from different corners of the New World. In the Clifton corner we have Ruth Wiles, waxing lyrical about the steely, lime-tinged Rieslings of South Australia’s Eden Valley. Manchester’s resident Riesling expert, Simon Woods (that's ME!) will be waving the Stars and Stripes for Riesling from Washington State in America's Pacific Northwest, where the wines tend to be softer and plumper, with a delicate floral edge. Going in to battle from the Midlands Team we have Rob from Birmingham, with a sprightly single-vineyard wine from Chile’s Leyda Valley. Two of them are dry, one is off-dry, rather than actively sweet. Just in case you thought they might all be sweet...

And if that wasn’t enough fun, we will also be sending out easy to follow recipe cards detailing a range of different dishes which can be easily prepared at home to bring the very best out of your wines.

The wines for both tastings are available to order via Great Wine Co with a special Local Wine School discount of 10% and free delivery at just £84 for the set of six. A link to order the wines will be sent with the offer code when you book your online access.

If you can’t join us for both tastings contact us and we can arrange access and the wines for each event individually.

Book your online access below and we will send instructions on how to join the meeting through the Zoom platform from a desktop, laptop, tablet or mobile phone.

This pass covers access for 2+ people to join to both tastings on Saturday 25th July - German Riesling and 1st August - The Great Riesling Debate
