Grape Expectations - Mourvèdre and Assyrtiko
Join us in Manchester City Centre for this wine tasting which forms part of our "Grape Expectations II" course. Each month we will look at some of the world's most famous and loved Red and White grape varieties and taste the diverse selection of varied flavours and styles of wines these grapes produce. For August, we’ll be on Mourvèdre and Assyrtiko.
Greece has been making wine for note just centuries but millennia. However, it’s only recently that its wines have hit a standard that has made the world sit up and take notice. Leading the white wine charge has been Assyrtiko, a grape which excels in sunny Santorini, producing remarkably sleek and sprightly wines for such a hot climate. Or at least that’s the common style: we’ll also try some wines that show there’s a little more to this classy grape than first meets the eye…
Mourvèdre aka Monastrell aka Mataro is a red grape that needs heat to show at its best. But when it gets that heat, it can produce some wonderfully gutsy but fragrant wines. We’ll try examples from France, Spain and Australia, some of them with other grapes blended in – this after all is the ‘M’ in the classic GSM blend – but others in which Mourvèdre plays the starring role
On the night we will taste at least 6 wines accompanied by full tasting notes and some cheese and ham to nibble on.
Perfect for those who love wine and want to know more. A great gift idea too!
