POSTPONED - Grape Expectations - Mencia & Marsanne/Roussanne

POSTPONED - Grape Expectations - Mencia & Marsanne/Roussanne

Due to the ongoing situation regarding COVID-19, and particularly in the light of the latest government advice, we have sadly had to postpone this tasting.

If you have booking on this tasting, an email with your options has been sent to the person who made the original reservation. Any queries, please contact us. We are always happy to help at this difficult time.

Join us in Manchester City Centre for this wine tasting which forms part of our "Grape Expectations II" course. Each month we will look at some of the world's most famous and loved Red and White grape varieties and taste the diverse selection of varied flavours and styles of wines these grapes produce. In June we will be tasting Mencia and the Rhône duo Marsanne & Roussanne.

Thirty years ago, hardly anyone spoke of Mencia, or Jaen as it’s known in Portugal. But since then, this intriguing red grape, with its echoes of Syrah and Cabernet Franc, has enjoyed a rise in fortunes, especially for those looking for freshness in Spanish red wines. We’ll try Spanish wines from Bierzo and Ribeira Sacra and Portuguese wines from Dão – we’d love to include some from other countries but so far, we haven’t found any!

The peachy Marsanne and the fragrant Roussanne are quite different grapes, but on their home turf of the northern Rhône valley, they usually are seen hand-in-hand. That’s not the case in other parts of the world though. To the east of the Rhône in Savoie, Roussanne – known here as Bergeron – does very well without any assistance, and the grape also enjoys success in South Africa and elsewhere. As for Marsanne, some of the oldest plantings in the world of Marsanne are in Australia, and the wines can be both excellent and very long-lived.

On the night we will taste at least 6 wines accompanied by full tasting notes and some cheese and ham to nibble on.

Perfect for those who love wine and want to know more. A great gift idea too!

This tasting takes place in the atmospheric Royal Exchange Theatre. We are delighted to offer those booking a 20% off drinks voucher which can be redeemed at The Rivals bar/restaurant.
