Grape Expectations - Syrah - Shiraz / Pinot Grigio -Pinot Gris
Join us in Manchester City Centre for this wine tasting which forms part of our "Grape Expecatations" course. Each month we will look at some of the world's most famous and loved Red and White grape varieties and taste the diverse selection of varied flavours and styles of wines these grapes produce, showcasing some of our favourites. In September we will be tasting the hugely popular Syrah (AKA Shiraz) and the surprising diverse Pinot Gris/Pinot Grigio.
So syrah and shiraz are genetically the same grape - but the wines they produce can be very different in style, depending on origin. The typical old-world syrah is lighter and leaner than the intense shiraz wines of the new world, which tend to be richer, riper and more full-bodied. Where it be a great syrah wines of the Northern Rhone or the bold robust wine of Australia's Barossa Valley it always worth remembering the name you get on the bottle - syrah or shiraz - will be an indication of style rather than where it is from. But which do you prefer? There's only one way to find out!
So whats the difference between Pinot Gris and Pinot Grigio? the answer is they are in fact exact same grape variety. This white grape, with a grayish / brownish pink skin (hence the name gris, or gray, in French) is also a mutation of Pinot Noir. While they are the same grape, the two names have come to infer two different styles of wine. Immensely popular, the Italian style Pinot Grigio wines are typically lighter-bodied, crisp, fresh, with vibrant stone fruit and floral aromas and a touch of spice. In contrast, Alsace Pinot Gris wines are more full-bodied, richer, spicier, and more viscous in texture. They also tend to have greater cellaring and ageing potential.
Join us on this wonderful tasting of Syrah/Shiraz and Pinot Gri/Grigio, to see whats in a name!
On the night we will taste 6 wines accompanied by full tasting notes and some cheese and ham to nibble on.
