4 Week Course - Dolce Vita, Dolce Vino - an in-depth tour of Italian Wine

Spurred on by the enthusiastic feedback from our Vive la France! and Viva España courses in 2019, we’ve decided that 2020 is the year when we’re going to tackle a third giant of the wine world – Italy.

There’s no doubt that Italy makes some of the best wines in the world. But there’s also no doubt that a country with 20 very different provinces and hundreds of different native grape varieties isn’t the easiest to get to grips with.

Hence Dolce Vita, Dolce Vino. Over four sessions, we’ll taste our way through the most important grapes and wines of this wonderful country and hopefully whet your appetite for further exploration.

All tastings are 7-9pm at the Royal Exchange Theatre

Friday 17th January: “Tuscany and the North East – we’ll begin with Prosecco and end with Amarone, and find space in between to include Tuscan greats such as Chianti Classico and Brunello di Montalcino, some top-class Soave and some of the excellent whites being made in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, the province next to the Slovenian border.

Friday 24th January: “The Islands– after a welcoming glass of Franciacorta Brut, we’ll investigate explore why Sicily and Sardinia are currently two of the most exciting sources of high class red and white wines in Europe. We’ll finish with a couple of excellent but very different sweet wines, maybe with a cantucci biscuit or two on the side.

Friday 31st January: “Mezziogiorno AKA southern Italy – when it comes to wine, sleepy southern Italy is waking for its slumbers and now flexing its muscles in very impressive fashion. It’s no surprise that reds made from grapes such as Aglianico, Primitivo and Negroamaro are turning heads, but equally distinctive are the excellent whites, where Fiano, Falanghina and Greco are just some of the stars.

Friday 7th February: “Piedmont & Beyond– this is the home the home of Nebbiolo, the force behind Barolo and Barbaresco, and one of the world’s finest red grapes. But there’s far more to the region, as delicious Dolcetto and bouncy Barbera demonstrate. And we’ll head north and east to Trentino Alto-Adige for some wonderfully aromatic white wines, plus one of the region’s unique reds

Over the four weeks, you’ll taste over 30 wines, and the cost for the entire course is just £120 – The normal cost of these tastings is £35, but book the whole course and pay just £30 per session.
