4 Week Supermarket Sweep - The best wines for your local supermarket
Get to grips with the fascinating world of wine and find out what are the best wines you can buy from the supermarket. This brand new 4 week course in Manchester city centre runs over 4 consecutive Fridays. The course is designed for people who enjoy wine and want to learn more about it, in a fun, friendly and relaxed setting with no previous wine tasting experience necessary!
Each week we will look at different wine styles from the major supermarkets. We will discuss how to spot a bargain, explore some grape varieties you might not have tried before and talk you through how to get the best wines when shopping. Are the discounts and reductions always worth it? What countries offer the best quality for the best price? What do all the terms on the labels actually mean? What should I really be matching with my dinner?

Each session we will taste 6 to 8 wine with full tasting notes and a selection of cheese and ham nibbles to accompany the wines. Wines will vary from £5 to £30 per bottle retail. Remember we don't sell wine so no sales pitch either!

Week 1 – The Best Champagne and Sparkling Wines - The first night of the course is all about fizz. What a grat place to start! We’ll taste some different delicious sparkling wines from around the world, including Champagne. We will learn about the different methods used to make them and find out if some of the alternatives to Champagne ae as good as the ral stuff. You can test which you like best by tasting sparkling wine and Champagne side by side.
Week 2 – The Best in Old World Red Wine - When wine people talk about the "old world" they really mean Europe. On this night we will explore the best supermarket wines from countries such as France, Spain, Italy and Portugal. We might even venture further afield to Romania, Hungary and Germany. we’ll also talk about tannin and why some wines get better with age, as well as some other useful tips like why/when you should decant wine and what temperature to serve it at.
Week 3 – The Best in New World Red Wine - Week three we move onto the "New World". With bold robust reds from the likes of Australia and Argentina, to lighter styles like a New Zealand Pinot Noir, we'll take in South Africa and also look to the good old US of A to see what the best options there are in your local supermarket. We'll give tips of food and wine matching and give you the chance to maybe try a something new.
We'll also cover things like use of oak, find out which is better - cork or screw cap, and bust a few wine myths too.
Week 4 – The Best in White Wine - This evening we’ll move on to talk about white wines and taste some crisp and dry delicious examples along the way. We’ll talk a bit about the grape varieties and what they taste like as well as the wine regions that they come from, consider their potential for food and wine matching and further hone your wine tasting skills. With so much on offer in the supermarket and some really great wines out there that you may have ignored before, we hope to give you the knoweldge and inspiration to get out there and try something wonderful!
