Grape Expectations - Pinot Noir / Viognier
Join us in Manchester City Centre for this wine tasting which forms part of our "Grape Expecations" course. Each month we will look at some of the world's most famous and loved Red and White grape varieties and taste the diverse selection of varied flavours and styles of wines these grapes produce. Showcasing some of our favourites. In July we will be tasting subtle and delightful Pinot Noir and the increasingly popular Viognier,
Pinot Noir is the classic grape of red Burgundy, whose greatest wines are concentrated in the east and south-east-facing limestone hills of Burgundy’s Côte d’Or. These are some the world's finest wines (with a fine price tag to match). Pinot Noir thrives in other parts of the Old and New World too. A succulent German Spätburgunder, is the most highly regarded red wine grape in Germany. Oregon in America’s Pacific north-west has staked its wine reputation on cool-climate Pinot Noir with considerable success and New Zealand has long claimed to make the best Pinot outside Burgundy. The only way to find out which you like best is to join us on this wonderful tasting and find out!
Viognier (French pronunciation: [vio n je]) is famed for its extraordinary combination of perfume and body. Viognier could truly be said to be the hedonist's white grape variety, even if it is often the wine maker who has the headache, and not just the drinker, as this grape has to be left on the vine for a very long time before its characteristic heady aroma fully develops. It's home in the Condrieu appellation on the right bank of the northern Rhône produces some if its must acclaimed wines. Aromatic, powerful viognier with its hallmark blossom scents and apricot and peach-like flavours, has become the darling of Californians, and, latterly Argentina, Australia and the South of France too. It makes powerfully rich, dry whites made for drinking young, offering a delicious alternative style to Chardonnay.
On the night we will taste 6 wines accompanied by full tasting notes and some cheese and ham to nibble on.
