Grape Expectations - Grenache/Sémillon
Join us in Manchester City Centre for this wine tasting which forms part of our "Grape Expectations" course. Each month we will look at some of the world's most famous and interesting Red and White grape varieties and taste the diverse selection of the varied flavours and styles of wines these grapes produce. Showcasing some of our favourites. In April we will be tasting the Grenache (or Garnacha in Spain) and Sémillon
Grenache is the grape chiefly responsible for two of the world's more celebrated reds, the classic (and many a Dads favourite wine) Châteauneuf-du-Pape and a more recent star, Priorat. Dominant in the much loved Southern Rhone "GSM" blend its popularity extends worldwide. It has also recently come to dominance is Priorat, one of Spains stand-out wine regions, with an extraordinary leap in wine quality, reputation and price over the last decade or so. Late ripening and a lover of warm climates it is generally spicy, berry-flavoured and soft on the palate and produces wine with a relatively high alcohol content, Grenache is also used to make rosé wines in France and Spain, notably those of the Tavel district in the Côtes du Rhône and those of the Navarra region.
Did you know Sémillon is France’s 3rd most planted white wine variety. Semillon grapes, underrated in much of the world, can produce arguably much more interesting, subtle and long-lived dry white wines than the hugely popular Sauvignon Blanc that is so often grown alongside. This versatile grape tends to be much more appreciated by wine insiders than by the average wine drinker. So this tasting is perfect to attend if you've never tried its delights! This golden-skinned grape is used to make dry and sweet white wines, mostly in France and Australia. Its particularly noteworthy for those wines from the Hunter Valley, just north of Sydney, where the wines it produces can age magnificently for 10 years or more.
On the night we will taste 6 wines accompanied by full tasting notes and some cheese and ham to nibble on.
Perfect for those who love wine and want to know more. A great gift idea too!
