South Africa and USA
South Africa is one of the newest, fastest-growing entrants onto our supermarket and off-licence shelves. It has experienced a meteoric improvement in quality in the last five years, as well as an explosion of new winemakers, wineries, and range of wine styles. We shall look at some of the leading winemakers from South Africa and contrast international grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah/Shiraz, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc with the indigenous grape varieties that South Africa has made her own - the delicious Pinotage and Chenin Blanc. You will experience some excellent wines that may change your view of this country’s wine.
California has an enormous diversity of climate from the cool coastal regions,m making great Pinot Noir and sparkling wine, to the warmer inland vineyards which specialise in some amazing Zinfandels. We will steer clear of some of the lower end 'industrial' wines which the USA exports and taste some examples of the quality it can achieve.
